Burnet baseball loses to Georgetown Gateway
The Burnet High School baseball team lost to Georgetown Gateway 7-3 April 12 in a game that was played a day later than scheduled because umpires were no-shows earlier in the week.
Game three is at Gateway at 7 p.m. Friday, April 14. The winner of that contest wins the series.
The Gators took a 2-0 lead in the first inning that was trimmed in half when Kurt Kassner hit a RBI double in the Bulldogs’ half of the inning.
But in the second inning, Gateway exploded for three more runs and had two runners on base with two outs when Burnet changed pitchers. Senior Braden Ellett-Clark walked the first batter he faced and the next hit a RBI single. Another runner tried to score but was thrown out at home when senior catcher Tanner O’Hair tagged him out.
After that, Ellett-Clark didn’t allow another run.
“We didn’t pitch well early,” Houston said. “You give up seven runs in the first two innings, it’s hard to come back. And we didn’t get the two-out hit.”
That was especially hard in the second and third innings when the Bulldogs had bases loaded. They stranded at least nine runners during the contest.
Jackson Crawford picked up a RBI when he hit into a groundout in the bottom of the second inning. Jesse Bachmayer got the other RBI on a groundout in the fifth inning.
Following the game, Houston reminded his players their goals are still intact and are very much within reach.
“You have to be able to get out of innings with two outs and get extra runs in innings when you have two outs,” Houston said. “It’s baseball — you’re going to have good days and bad days. You get another opportunity in two days to go do it again. It’s how you respond.”
